A completed flight is not a completed treatment. Check what reached the target.
Define treatment success
Virginia Tech links application quality to calibration, droplet characteristics, weather and aircraft settings. Deposition and drift both matter. Actual operations must follow the product label and local rules; advertised maximum speed does not establish a suitable application speed.
Maintain three independent checks
Our checklist separates aviation conditions, pesticide authorization and surrounding exposure. Confirm the registered crop, target, method, number of treatments and harvest restrictions from the applicable label. An aviation green light must not imply permission for the whole operation.
Validate before scaling
Following manufacturer procedures and local agronomic guidance, record height, speed, effective swath and flow. Deposition cards alone do not prove biological control. Compare canopy zones, downwind edges and reference treatments; retain untreated controls where appropriate.
Record interruption and restart
Record restart location, treated area, remaining product and weather changes. Replanning must preserve the treatment history to prevent overlap. Stop for drift, leaks or exposure concerns and follow local incident procedures before deciding whether work can resume.
Measure deposition and airborne movement separately
The INTA–Balcarce drift protocol separately samples deposited and airborne material while recording weather. Water-sensitive cards provide complementary information. An absence of visible deposits on a card does not establish zero drift.
Reconcile the tank and field records
Our proposed material ledger records receipts, refills, closing residue and material transferred for recovery or cleaning. Keep liquid volume distinct from active-ingredient quantity, retaining product, lot and units. A separate field ledger should preserve prescription version, target area, estimated treatment coverage and uncertain coverage. Differences prompt investigation of measurement error, leaks, missing entries or residue; they cannot all be classified as drift. Filling an actual-use log with planned values after a flow-meter failure destroys its audit value. Mark estimates explicitly.
Reconstruct interruptions with two kinds of position
Store flight trajectory separately from discharge state. A continuous track does not mean treatment occurred while a pump was off, and a communications gap does not prove that treatment stopped. An illustrative record could be “Mission S17, plan version 3, block C; communications gap; discharge confirmation pending.” Before restart, the responsible person reconciles the last confirmed treatment segment, remaining material and current conditions. Do not automatically reapply over uncertain segments. Decisions about retreatment return to the applicable product conditions and agronomic reviewer, with the reviewer identified in the record.
Separate operational acceptance from efficacy review
Our proposed acceptance sheet separates completeness of the operational record from later treatment efficacy. Predefine deposition assessment locations, such as outer canopy, interior and edges, and observe reference areas consistently. Schedule efficacy review around the target and evaluation plan, rather than operator convenience. Include other treatments and irrigation in the history. If aircraft, product and assessment date all change together, the difference cannot be attributed solely to the aircraft. Separate flight completion, record acceptance and efficacy evaluation in a service contract so responsibility for investigation and correction is clear.
