Equal spreading rates do not guarantee equal establishment.
Separate liquid and granular operations
In the proposed data model, keep L/ha and kg/ha distinct. Seed also requires count, germination and treatment information. Revalidate settings when material size or moisture changes, using manufacturer calibration procedures and field measurements.
Keep prescription and actual application
A prescription is a plan; an application log is an observation. Version both with units, coordinate reference and validity date. Check boundary and turning effects. Have an agronomic reviewer approve prescriptions using soil tests, cropping plans and yield records.
Count the work after seeding
Compare establishment systems over the whole season: preparation, water, birds, weeds, replanting and harvest uniformity. Flight time alone is not a fair comparison with transplanting. Track emergence and final yield in trial plots, then compare total seasonal cost and revenue.
Timely broadcasting does not guarantee establishment
University of Guelph trials broadcast wheat into standing soybean before harvest. They also reported surface seeds drying and seedlings failing after germination. Earlier delivery does not resolve seed–soil contact and moisture requirements.
Treat a material change as a calibration change
The following is an operational design proposal. Do not reuse discharge settings without checking changes in treatment, particle size, mixture or storage condition, even for the same product name. Link material and lot IDs to the device, settings and reviewer. Under the manufacturer’s calibration procedure, record quantities or seed counts in individual collection containers as well as the total. This helps reveal concentrated centers and thin edges. A correct total mass of mixed seed does not establish correct distribution of each component. Resolve suspected residual material and complete the appropriate cleaning before releasing the next lot.
Keep three outcomes with distinct denominators
We propose separate measures for release, emergence and establishment. Estimated seed input, emerged plants and plants surviving to the assessment date have different denominators and meanings. Distinguish laboratory germination from field emergence, recording date, sampled area, location, residue and moisture condition. An increase in green imagery still requires field confirmation of crop versus weeds. Map missing bands and areas needing reseeding rather than reporting only an average. Review final yield and subsequent work before describing good aerial distribution as success for the entire cropping system.
| Stage | Record | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Release and distribution | Quantity per container; material lot | Germination or establishment |
| Emergence and establishment | Plants per area; assessment date | Final yield |
| Season review | Yield, additional work and total cost | Identical results elsewhere or next year |
Include corrective work in service acceptance
An illustrative ledger could state: “Field B, material lot L2, prescription version 4; refill weighed; closing residue unconfirmed; north-edge distribution requires review.” Hold total-quantity acceptance until residue is reconciled; a flight log alone does not approve coverage. Agree which stages the service includes and who investigates distribution or emergence failures. If waiting for rain changes the date, reconfirm the prescription and cropping plan. Compare ground-machine and manual alternatives as well. A low initial seeding fee can still produce higher seasonal expenditure if replanting or weed management increases.
